Trading with a VPS

More and more traders who use an EA (Expert Advisor) for trading are now using a VPS. Brokers understood that the use of VPS was increasingly standardized; they therefore set up deals in which they offer a free VPS on opening a trading account.
Here are some answers to the main questions traders ask themselves about VPS:

What is a VPS?

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server.
A VPS can be compared to a remote computer on which traders take control remotely via their own computer.

What is the purpose of a VPS for traders?

A VPS is used by traders to keep their expert advisor active 24 hours a day.
Indeed, even if traders turn their personal computer off, the VPS remains on and continues to run their Expert Advisor.

How traders connects to their VPS?

Connection to a VPS is via the Internet from any device with a VPS connection module (Putty, UltraVNC, or a simple "connection to a remote computer" window under windows. When a VPS opens, traders get a window on their computer which displays their remote computer’s desktop (VPS).

What can traders do on a VPS?

Traders can add software (e.g. the MetaTrader platform), connect to the internet from the VPS (e.g. to download files directly onto the VPS), store data, etc.
Traders can do exactly the same things as on their own computer, the only difference is that they see their VPS in a window on their personal computer.

How much does a VPS cost?

If traders do not receive a free VPS from their broker, they can rent a VPS themselves. Different VPS providers exist all over the world; for example: OVH
The rental price of a VPS varies depending on the power chosen. Effectively, as with a computer or a traditional server, the more powerful it is the more it costs.
Subscriptions currently cost between €2 and €50 per month or more (depending on the various suppliers).

Why do brokers offer their customers a VPS free of charge?

Offering a free VPS is an additional selling point for brokers. The objective is to attract traders to open an account with them, and not with the competition.

What to watch out for when using a VPS?

At first glance, traders believe that a VPS will allow them to keep their expert advisor active 24/7.
This is true in theory, but this does not include VPS updates that require a VPS reboot, and therefore a trading platform shutdown (and therefore an EA shutdown, etc.).
Traders have some down time each time their VPS suppliers apply a VPS security update followed by a VPS reboot.

How powerful should a VPS be for trading use?

Difficult to determine. But as with computers, the minimum power offered is very often largely sufficient.
Generally, brokers offer a free VPS with 2GB RAM and 100Mbps bandwidth.
So, for traders using their own VPS solution, I would advise them to get this configuration at least.

Which brokers offer a free VPS solution? (by becoming their customer)

- FxPro
- AXI TRADER
- ActivTrades
- FXCM
- Pepperstone
- Vantage FX
- etc.
In fact, almost all brokers.
